Advice for Kinesio Taping the Ankle

In the UK it is estimated that there are over 42,000 severe ankle sprains, requiring hospital or therapist treatment each year – this does not consider minor sprains, which are thought to be close to 1 million. The ankle is a complex joint which is capable of a wide range of movement: flexion, extension, inversion, and eversion as well as a combination of these movements. The design of the ankle allows for movement and balance and enables it to take the full weight of the body. The ankle can be subjected to considerable force, particularly when running and jumping. There are two different types of an ankle sprain. The inversion ankle sprain is the most common type and occurs when the foot falls inward and stretches the outer ligaments too far. The eversion ankle sprain occurs when the foot is twisted outwards and the inner ligament is stretched too far. The first aim with an ankle sprain is to decrease pain and swelling and protect the ligaments from further injury. To recover from an ankle sprain fully, we are looking to restore the normal range of motion to your ankle joint and strengthen its ligaments and supporting muscles. Among the responses in a recent survey, Tubigrip or similar support was used routinely in 55% of cases to treat ankle sprains - with below knee casts 3% and braces 2% in the most serious instances. Today, we are looking at how Kinesio Tape may be used to support a sprain and reduce swelling. Advice for Kinesio Taping the Ankle: Designed for swelling of the ankle due to accumulation of excessive fluid in the tissues typically found in ankle sprains. To apply Kinesio Tape you will need access to a single roll of Kinesio Tape which you can cut into a fan cut strip. Alternatively, Kinesio Tape can be purchased in pre-cut fan strips on our website at www.kinesiotaping.co.uk or through Amazon online. Directions: 1. Measure and cut 2 Fan Cuts from above the area of swelling, to below. Remove a small section of the paper backing from the anchor of the first Fan Cut and place the anchor with no tension above the area of swelling on the front of the leg 2. Without stretching the tape, peel away the paper backing and apply each tail to cover the area of swelling. Lay down the ends without tension. Rub the tape to activate the adhesive 3. Remove a small section of the paper backing from the anchor of the second Fan Cut and place the anchor with no tension above the area of swelling on the inside of the leg Without stretching the tape, peel away the paper backing and apply each tail to cover the area of swelling and form a criss-cross pattern with the first Fan Cut. Lay down the ends without tension, on skin. Rub the tape to activate the adhesive
