Focusing on the shoulder muscles and joint.

Updated: Apr 9, 2020

With many of our therapists, customers and clients working from home at the moment we thought we would post some information over the next few weeks covering the most common muscles injuries alongside advice, tips and videos demonstrating some simple # KinesioTaping taping applications.

This week we are focusing on the shoulder muscles and joint.

The shoulder joint is made up of three bones: the clavicle (collarbone), the scapula (shoulder blade), and the humerus (upper arm bone). Shoulder pain is very common and injury to these bones and their surrounding ligaments and muscles is most often sustained during sports with repetitive overhead motion, but there are many everyday activities which can cause issues and can be due to, or lead to, one of the shoulder conditions below:

FROZEN SHOULDER: It is a condition where a shoulder becomes painful and stiff. Without treatment, symptoms usually go but recovery can take a long time and #KinesioTape may be able to provide some interim support alongside advice from a physiotherapist.

ROTATOR CUFF: This is a group of muscles and tendons that surround the shoulder joint and help to keep it stable. Rotator cuff disorders are one of the most common causes of pain. The # KinesioTaping examples in the video and images in this post may be useful for the recovery phase.

ACROMIOCLAVICULAR JOINT: Conditions like osteoarthritis may affect this joint at the top of the shoulder. Issues are usually due to wear and tear of the joint or because of injury.

POLYMYALGIA This is a condition which causes pain, stiffness and tenderness in large muscles, typically around the shoulders, upper arms and hips. Your GP can help with

SOFT TISSUE INJURIES A soft tissue injury can happen to a ligament, tendon or muscle around your shoulder joint. This may be caused in many different ways, such as an accident, sport injury or shoulder strain following heavy lifting or carrying.

DISLOCATION AND INSTABILITY A dislocation happens when the ball of the joint has moved out of its socket. Shoulder instability occurs when the joint cannot not keep the bones close together and the humerus often 'pops out' of position. Therapists often use #KinesioTaping to provide support and to help hold the joint in place during the recovery phase.

REFERRED PAIN This is a pain which is caused by a problem somewhere else in the body but is felt in the shoulder due to the nerve pathways. A therapist can help to assess your situation and adjust the treatment protocol and help to identify where shoulder pain may be coming from.

A trained Kinesio Taping therapist can provide advice on managing your condition, appropriate exercises and advice on recovery strategies. If you are unable to make a visit to a therapist and your shoulder issue is a soft tissue issue which has been caused by a sport injury or strain you could also consider a Kinesio Shoulder Pre-cut application. Each pack contains a tape application which can be worn for 2-3 days, 24 hours a day. It is hypoallergenic, made from 100% cotton and latex free. It is also water-resistant, so you can shower, bathe and swim whilst wearing it. You can also continue with your activities or training, as Kinesio Pre-cut allows for full range of motion, supporting the muscle yet not restricting movement. You can purchase Kinesio Pre-cut on our main website at: http://bit.ly/38ejoRa or therapists can access this line on our B2B at: http://bit.ly/2PEKngI.

You can cut a shoulder application from any Kinesio Tex roll too – choose from FP, Classic or Performance – available on www.kinesiotaping.co.uk, the B2B and Amazon.
