As a fast, high impact and contact sport, rugby has an injury rate which is three times higher than football. Over an average season, 1 in 4 players will receive an injury which puts them out of the game for 1 or more matches. Over 40% of injuries are muscle strains, 30% are sprains, followed by dislocations, fractures, lacerations and overuse injuries.

With the Six Nations Rugby 2020 upon us, injuries are always a cause for concern - so we thought we'd take a look this week at the most common rugby injuries and why they occur:
Sprains and strains This type of injury is usually caused when muscles or ligaments become overstretched by stopping or starting suddenly, changing direction, or falling. With these actions being repeated during a rugby match and in training, they feature high up in the list of top rugby injuries. Physiotherapy can help to build up strength and mobility in overstretched ligaments and muscles. Sprained ankles are very common, representing almost 1 in 7 rugby injuries. Kinesio Taping using a fan-cut technique may be used to reduce initial swelling and then for support - check out some of the taping images
Dislocated shoulder Shoulders can become dislocated during a tackle or fall if the arm is rotated out. Following rest, physiotherapy can assist with shoulder strength. You may also use Kinesio Taping during the recovery phase to help support the muscle without restricting range of motion. You can see a photo example of Kinesio Pre-cut Shoulder being used for this purpose in the photo gallery below.
Overuse injuries Overuse injuries, such as bursitis (inflammation of the bursa, in the shoulder, elbow, knee and ankle joint) and tendinitis are also commonly seen in rugby players. The sustained pressure on the joints and muscles from running, falls, knocks and catches is the most common cause.Without treatment these minor ailments can deteriorate and lead to more severe injuries, or reduced mobility.

There are a range of Kinesio Taping techniques for these types of injuries - review our gallery to learn more. Suffering with a muscle injury?
