Super Sports Taping for Super Bowl Sunday

With the head office for Kinesio being in the USA and one of the biggest sporting fixtures in their sporting calendar having taken place last Sunday - the Super Bowl - we thought we'd take a look at some of the most common injuries associated with the game.

Injuries occur during football games and practice due to the combination of high speeds and full contact. As many as 1.5 million people participate in American football in the United States, but there are an estimated 1.2 million football-related injuries sustained annually too. 51% of injuries occur in training - in general, sprains and strains account for 40% of injuries, contusions 25%, fractures 10%, concussions 5% and dislocations 15%.

OVERUSE INJURIES

Low-back pain is frequently seen in football players due to muscle overuse. Overuse can also lead to overtraining syndrome, when a player trains beyond the ability for the body to recover.

TRAUMATIC INJURIES

Knee injuries in football are very common - anterior and posterior cruciate ligament (ACL/PCL) and the menisci (cartilage of the knee). Football players also have a higher chance of ankle sprains, due to the surfaces they play on and cutting motions. Shoulder injuries often occur in offensive and defensive linemen.

HOW CAN FOOTBALL INJURIES BE PREVENTED?

- Warm-up and cool-down- Use strength training and stretching- Keep hydrated- Wear properly fitted equipment - helmet, pads and mouthguard- Talk to a professional if you have any concerns about football injuries, prevention or rehabilitation

TAPING FOR BACK PAIN

Kinesio taping for the lower back can be an effective way to support the muscles - it can be used alone or combined with other therapeutic techniques. When applied properly, it can help to provide relief from painful and common back injuries or muscle inflammation. It's latex free, elastic properties provide comfortable support without restricting range of motion. Each application can be worn up to 5 days, providing 24hr benefit. Check out the images below to see examples of taping for the lower back.
