When applying Kinesio Tape to the skin, there are some fundamental tips that you can follow to get the most from your tape application:
• Seek assistance and apply the most effective application. Therapists trained by the KTAI in Kinesio Taping can assess your condition and show you how to best apply the tape for your issue - sometimes, combining advanced taping techniques offers the best treatment solution.
• Ensure your skin is clean, dry and free of any oils and lotions before application - this will ensure that the tape adheres to the skin. When taping on skin with hair, it should be shaved or clipped.
• Don't forget that all varieties of original Kinesio Tape use a heat activated adhesive. Rubbing the tape with the palm of your hand after application will set it in position.
• It is normal for wrinkles to appear in the tape when it is applied to the skin and the muscles are relaxed. The wrinkles help fo lift the skin and, in turn, this will help to reduce swelling.
• Use the square guides on the back of the tape to help measure the length of the tape strip and make the correct cuts.
• Remove a small portion of the paper backing at the end of the tape strip in order to create an “Anchor” to apply the tape. Don't put any tension on the ends of the tape when applying.• Make sure to round all ends of the tape. Rounded ends help prevent snagging, fraying, and the tape peeling off.
• Wait 30 - 45 minutes after tape application before undertaking sporting activities.• Pat or blot the tape to dry it - don't wipe. Direct heat can cause over-adhering and can make removal difficult - so avoid using a hairdryer or radiator.
