Taylor goes the distance!

Young Taylor Campbell is a 17-year-old schoolboy from Windsor who is currently ranked first in the UK for U20 Hammer Throwing.

Taylor uses Kinesio around his knees and patella tendons to help with stability while doing plyometric and weight training and occasionally on his Achilles and glutes to ease any discomfort due to tightness or frequent training. He also uses Kinesio tape on his lower back during rest days and when travelling long distances to assist with keeping a correct posture.

The hammer throw is one of the four throwing events in track and field athletics competitions, along with the discus throw, shot put and javelin.

Taylor took up the sport when he was 11 after his father said he should give it a try. He took himself off to Thames Valley Athletics Centre where he spoke to Chris Mellish who introduced him to the sport and became his first coach. In his first year he secured silver in the Berkshire County Championships and Berkshire Schools Championships.

Taylor's brother, The 400m GB sprinter Ainsley Campbell, then got him some tickets for the European Youth Olympics Festival in 2009. It was watching British Hammer Thrower Andrew Elkins at this event that really inspired Taylor to take up hammer throwing with a vengeance and he set himself a challenge in 2010 to not only throw 40m, but also make the English Schools Championships.

He managed to not only achieve his throwing distance but exceeded it by 19m, getting 59m! He then went on to win Silver in the 2010 English Schools Championships, the South of England Championships and the Amateur Athletics Association (AAA) Championships and was ranked third in the UK by the end of the season after only two years in the sport.

Now being coached by Olympian and sports commentator Paul Dickenson, 2011 was another good season and by 2012 Taylor had won five gold medals in English U17 AAA Championships, Schools International Championships, South of England Championships, English Schools Championships and Sainsburys Schools Games, also securing two records and finished with a throw just short of the 2013 IAAF World Youth Championship qualifying distance.

Taylor had another good season in 2013 where he picked up two England representations and qualified for the IAAF World Youth Championships, earning himself his first Great Britain Vest.

Feeding off the experience Taylor gained in 2013 season he trained harder and smarter than ever and in his first competition he produced a huge PB of 64.31m with the Senior men's hammer (7.26kg) that not only saw him place 2ND in the U23 men's rankings as a 17year old athlete but the distance was the furthest ever thrown by a 17year old British athlete of all time and was also the standard for the IAAF World Junior Championships,

Taylor Is not only ranked first in the UK U20 but also is also 9th in Europe, and 13th in the World (U20) with a throw of 71.53m with a 6kg hammer.

So what for 2014? After a great start to the season, Taylor, never afraid of setting himself a tough challenge, says: "I'm aiming to make the GB team and would like to win all national U20 events this year such as the World Junior Trials, English Schools Championships and Loughborough international and to put myself in a good confident position for the 2015 season with high hopes of making an impact at the 2015 European Championships"

As Taylor Campbell has a habit of surpassing even his own high expectations, Kinesio UK suggests you keep a close eye on this exceptionally talented and determined young athlete.
