The British Basketball League

The British Basketball League, or BBL, Trophy is one of the most popular competitions in British Basketball and it has been running for as long as the BBL - over 30 years. The 12 BBL clubs, together with 4 non-BBL teams, take part in the competition - with all teams competing in the first round. The winners travel to the Emirates Arena in Glasgow this weekend, where the 2019 British Basketball Trophy Finals will take place.

Basketball is considered a contact sport, as opposed to a collision sport like ice hockey. It has one of the higher injury rates when compared to other contact sports - with professional players being at the highest risk. Injuries are generally defined as either acute/traumatic or overuse injuries. Acute injuries occur due to a sudden force or impact (fall or stumble) resulting in direct damage to ligaments or bones.

Research has identified that ankle sprains make up the majority of injuries in basketball players (43%). It can happen when you twist or turn your foot beyond its normal range of movement. The most common type of ankle sprain is an inversion sprain, where the ankle rolls outward and the foot rolls inward. This can stretch or tear the ligaments that support the joint.

Symptoms may vary, but they may include:

- pain- swelling- bruising- restricted movement- difficulty putting weight on your foot- instability of your ankle

If you suspect an ankle sprain it should be reviewed by a therapist. Other recommendations include ice, rest and supporting the ankle with external strapping. In the early stages of an ankle injury, Kinesio Tape may help to reduce swelling. When returning to activity, it may be used to provide support without restricting range of motion. Continued Kinesio taping when taking part in sport can offers extra stability to help to prevent future injury.
