Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) can sometimes be a complication of pregnancy - reportedly as high as 62%. The typical symptoms are numbness or tingling in the thumb, index finger, middle finger and radial half of the ring finger. While most women experience improvement following delivery, a significant percentage may still have some issues for up to 3 years later.
Kinesio Taping may be helpful when trying to reduce superficial fluid and swelling in CTS. When Kinesio Tape is applied, small convolutions cause the skin to lift, helping to give more space underneath the tape and taking pressure off interstitial fluid. As the arm moves, the tape also acts like a pump and stimulates lymph circulation.
The tape may also help to channel lymph in a specific direction - a “fan” cut of tape is often used for this. Kinesio would always recommend visiting a trained therapist for an assessment as there can sometimes be contraindications for taping during pregnancy. If taping is not successful within a few weeks, referral to a specialist may be needed.
Kinesio Tape can be purchase online, including Kinesio Pre-cut for wrist - http://bit.ly/2ZOliny. You can also contact us directly if you need more information.
